Speedgate as a Service: the solution for Schiphol Express
From its logistical centre, Schiphol Express manages the handling and road transportation of air freight. Logically, this involves much coming and going of trucks. Trucks that need to be able to quickly and easily drive on and off site while unauthorised persons need to be kept out. The old entrance gates were in urgent need of replacement. Reason enough for Solidiam, the building’s owner, to look for new, fast Speedgates. That is why in autumn 2019 they came knocking at HTC parking & security’s door for 4 new Speedgates. Pascal Beuman, our Account Manager, was only too happy to get to work on this request. In conjunction with Solidiam, he began looking for the right solution to perfectly match the client’s requirement. It very quickly became clear that an interesting alternative to investing in new Speedgates would be the SaaS proposition of ‘Speedgate as a Service’. A good reason for Pascal to make further inquiries within the HTC organization about the most cost-effective solution.
No investment risk and fully managed
If a Speedgate is maintained correctly, it should easily last for a good 25 years. It is, of course, great to have such a long service life but it also entails a responsibility. The question is, how do you as the owner keep such a high-grade, specialised product in tip-top condition all those years so that its reliability remains guaranteed? This was something that those at Solidiam were asking themselves as well. Naturally, they could have taken out a maintenance contract for this but the concept of Speedgate as Service was a better fit with the long-term vision for the building and site of Schiphol Express. Stefan Morssink, Business Innovation Manager at HTC: “At HTC, we are continually looking for innovative and sustainable ways in which to provide qualitatively high-grade products and give our customers peace of mind. Speedgate as a Service is a logical step in this direction. When Solidiam came and asked us to think of an appropriate solution without investment risk but with worry-free use and management, it soon became clear that Speedgate as a Service was the answer to all their needs.”
Fully fitted new vehicle entrances
One of the first steps was reconfiguring the entrances. Stefan: “We can only provide the guaranteed availability if the entrance is used in the proper manner and the Speedgates do not malfunction. For those reasons, we began by improving user-friendliness for the drivers. These people are often working under time pressure and most of them are unfamiliar with the situation on-site. In that case, it’s nice when the site layout helps you to use the access properly. One of the ways in which we achieved this was to introduce clear line markings. LED lighting and strategically placed intercom posts also ensure that entering and exiting proceed smoothly and easily. In addition, the Speedgates are equipped with smart (IoT) technology and built-in cameras. In the event something goes wrong then we can easily trace the cause and quickly repair any damage.
From product to best-value procurement
Naturally, servicing and maintenance are taken care of by HTC. This is part and parcel of the Speedgate as a Service contract so that Schiphol Express does not have to concern itself with anything. “They are buying a service rather than a product”, as Stefan explains. “The quality of this service is recorded in clear KPIs that are reviewed on an annual basis. This provides certainty for Solidiam, and thus for Schiphol Express too, that all the agreed objectives and quality standards will be met for a fixed, advantageous price throughout the duration of use. An arrangement that fits very well with today’s trend for best-value procurement, otherwise known as procurement performance. A means of purchasing in which the value in use remains guaranteed and risks are minimised. In this particular case, it means that Schiphol Express benefits from optimised vehicle entry and the use of qualitatively high-grade Speedgates that simply work all the time as they should. HTC guarantees performance for the entire contract period.
Prepared for a sustainable future
What’s more, this method of procurement contributes to a circular economy. More and more demands are being made on the sustainable use of raw materials and energy. This emphasizes the need for solutions in which the value of products and raw materials is used in an optimal fashion. Stefan: “That is something with which we, at HTC, are fully engaged. For example, our Speedgates are manufactured from quality components that can be completely or partly redeployed after a long service life. Smart technology also plays a role in this. This enables us to carry out made-to-measure maintenance and prevent faults from occurring, or assist remotely. The impact on the environment and the customer are kept to a minimum in this way.”
